Welcoming New Orleans to the neighborhood, Papa Jack’s is the latest in a slew of international niche bars and restaurants opening around Brisbane.
A fellow foodie friend and I decided to check out the New Orleans inspired venue on a rainy night. Hidden away on the corner of McLachlan and Connor Street in Fortitude Valley, the humble exterior may have you fooled into believing it’s just another place to wet your whistle.
A quick glance of the menu will show the careful consideration that has gone into bringing the New Orleans style and soul food to Brisbane. Although the food menu is not huge it does offer a great range of options. We settled on a pulled pork baguette, leek with baguette slices and the obligatory serving of fries covered in a cheese sauce.
As far as bar food goes it was delicious and thankfully served the oversized American portions. As two designated drivers we were tragically unable to test-drive the cocktail menu. However the extensive range of classics and signatures was still impressive. Some of the cocktails are available to be bought by the bottle while others offer options for the adventurous such as having them served in coconuts.
Although the room is small and a little dark as most bars are, it somehow avoids feeling cramped. The stylish décor and the intimacy of the space makes for a great atmosphere, combining the familiarity of a pub meal with the luxury of a higher class bar or restaurant.
As a small venue Papa Jack’s would be ideal to drop into for Friday night drinks after a long working week. Stop by even just to pick up where I left off and try a cocktail.
