Mother & Son at QPAC

The iconic ABC television series Mother and Son has come back to life in Brisbane with Geoffrey Atherden’s hilarious stage play.

Performed by the Queensland Theatre Company, the intimate cast told the unforgettable tale of maddening Mother Maggie Beare, played by Noeline Brown, and her dependable 40-odd year old son Arthur, played by Darren Gilshenan.

Mother & Son highlighted the differing roles in dysfunctional family life from raising teenagers to being the solely responsible carer for a parent, all while barely leaving the leaving room of Maggie’s Melbourne home..

Atherden brought a collection of fresh ideas to the stage including the introduction of mobile phones, internet, Skype and high-tech devises that have emerged since the television series’ heyday in the 1980s. Atherden used humor to illustrate how these items can baffle those who have not been brought up with the multitude of gadgets.

Together the actors captured the attention of the crowd, some who could recall every line from the first episode and others who were new to the storyline, with natural comic instincts and witty lines about love, sex, marriage, affairs, divorce and the problems of getting older.

Mother & Son was a hilarious production that gave the audience an insight into somebody else’s hectic family life.
