Cirque Du Soleil’s TOTEM

Cirque Du Soleil’s wonderful, strange and inspired performance, TOTEM, came to life on opening night in Brisbane as it brought out laughter and gasps of excitement from within the crowd.

Celebrating their 30th anniversary, Cirque Du Soleil used colour, creative instrumentals, incredible live song and choreographed contemporary dance to transform acrobatics, athleticism and circus acts into a unique theatrical experience.

With a strong degree of imagination, TOTEM added a touch of sparkle and life to each act as the cast used their talents to tell the tale of the evolution of mankind from an amphibian state and beyond.

The performance showcased stories of humanity, creatures on the earth and the circle of life through: bar numbers and caraspace using a giant turtle at centre stage revealing a community of amphibians, fish and vibrant leaping fogs; a comic act of rings trio shown with grace and undoubtable strength; contortions of the human body while balancing on one hand by an agile performer that expressed the challenges faced when interacting outside of humanity; and the cultural unicycles and bowls that portrayed a breathtaking and beautiful vision of fall.

Cirque Du Soleil took the performance to a new level with an intriguing scientific display of manipulation in a laboratory that quantified, measured and put into boxes the questions of the universe.

However it was the fixed trapeze duo that drew out the sentimental side of the crowd as the pair of star-crossed lovers intertwined their bodies in a seductive, playful and compelling dance on one trapeze with a graceful and elegant bearing.

Once more, the male and female roller skaters illustrated the power of individual expression.

Dressed in white attire with a hint of sparkle, the alluring and believable couple captured the hearts of all as they symbolised young love and a wedding ceremony.

Written and directed by Robert Lepage, TOTEM, illustrated a certain sparkle and comic flair that is expected in all Cirque Du Soleil performances while setting itself apart with an immensely imaginative story line about the journey into the evolution of mankind.
