Mr Holmes

Based on Mitch Collins’ book A Slight Trick of the Mind, Mr Holmes is a delightful movie that portrays a very elderly Sherlock Holmes coming to grips with his life and events surrounding a case that led to his retirement.

A brilliant performance by Ian McKellen shows a very human and sensitive portrayal of the ageing Holmes who is cared for by the ever obliging yet sometimes impatient housekeeper Mrs Munro (Laura Linney) and her intelligent and engaging young son Roger (Milo Parker).
Set in 1947, in a remote and charming Sussex farmhouse, the film moves from the south coast of England to earlier days in London and Japan.

The film explores the complexity of human relationships and uncovers the truth that sometimes a good investigation needs a little more than merely exposing the facts.

Best viewed after the traditional English dinner, Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding
