Returning this year to celebrate the big 4-0, Brisbane’s biggest Greek festival Paniyiri is set to be a weekend full of fabulous food and entertainment.
Held in South Brisbane’s Musgrave Park and the Greek Club, this year’s Paniyiri festival will feature much of the wonderful fare that the event is famous for.
At the heart of Paniyiri is of course the food. More than 30 food stores will be serving up delicious Greek delicacies including baklava, haloumi, souvlakia, dolmades and the utterly irresistible honey puffs.
For those wanting to get involved, Paniyiri will host honey puff and olive eating competitions as well as Greek coffee making classes, grape stomping and Greek cooking demonstrations.
If you’re not busy indulging in that “last honey puff”, there’ll be plenty of stars to see at Paniyiri.
Returning as official host of the event will be Australia’s favourite Greek goddess Effie, while George Mason and Isabella Giovinazzo from Seven’s Home and Away, Radio 97.3, 4KQ and Brisbane’s greatest cooks will join the public in a range of activities.
Taking place on the weekend will be the Greek Dancing with the Stars event, judged by Effie herself, as well as Hellenic and belly dancing. The ever-popular plate smashing and ‘Zorba-till-you-drop’ events are also set to draw crowds, while the main stage will be the place to appear in ‘Brisbane’s Biggest Selfie’ or ‘My Big Fat Greek Selfie’, inspired by the box office hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.
To celebrate the 40 year milestone, festival attendees will get the chance to taste the flavours of Greece at home with their very own Paniyiri 40th Anniversary Cookbook.
Free with entry, the cookbook contains recipes for traditional Greek treats such as spanakopittakia and baklava, as well as inventive dishes from the likes of Alistair McLeod of Al’FreshCo and Matt Wood of Stokehouse Q.
Arguably Australia’s biggest and best Greek festival, Paniyiri will be the place to be on the 21st and 22nd of May. Bringing together people of all backgrounds to celebrate the vibrant Greek culture, Paniyiri’s 40th anniversary will be a big fat weekend of fun.
