An injured Union soldier, John Mc Burney (Colin Farrell) who is found in the woods becomes the object of fascination for girls in a southern boarding school during the last year of the American Civil War.

Directed by Sofia Coppola, Beguiled is a remake of an earlier movie by the same name based on Thomas P. Cullinans novel. It is not surprising that Coppola took out the Best Director Award for this film during the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, and she was only the second woman to ever win this award, remarkably after a 56 year gap.

The film is visually stunning and is set on location at Madewood, an overwhelmingly beautiful Greek revival plantation home, a former cotton plantation in Virginia, the American South.

Exquisite cinematography is paired brilliantly with a musical score composed by rock band Phoenix. It’s the music, teamed with brilliant performances by Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning that lead the audience through an emotionally charged journey of female rivalry, betrayal and ultimate empowerment.

True to form, Coppola delivers a film told through the eyes of a woman, and, with an inexplicit psychological twist, it’s an exceptional thriller.
