Boasting over 80 incredible garments, Undressed: 350 Years of Underwear in Fashion is on display for the summer at Queensland Museum.
The collection, which is on loan from London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, showcases a range of stunning undergarments as well as four films featuring the commentary of Victoria and Albert Museum Fashion Curator Eleri Lynn and an impressive collection of photographs and print advertisements.
The exhibition has been arranged with care and attention to detail with a boudoir approach and draping netted curtains that set the mood.
The soft lighting enhances the beautiful silk and satin corsets, with a stunning glimmer over the fabrics.
Undressed: 350 Years of Underwear in Fashion showcases a range of works including the oldest known brassiere in a museum collection, a pregnancy corset that challenges audiences, steel cage crinolines, a pair of Queen Victoria’s drawers, metal stays and a male corset.
The highlight of the exhibition is an original corseted Bottega Veneta evening gown worn by Actress Emma Watson during the 2011 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows premiere in New York.
The garments of the exhibition have been extremely well preserved, with some pieces dating back to the 17th century. Rare items, with some on public display for the first time, have travelled the world as part of Victoria and Albert Museum’s exhibit.
Each piece has been beautifully complimented with placards detailing the garment’s purpose and history. Commentary by Lynn has also been displayed with each item from the collection.
With knowledgeable and approachable guides, the exhibition allows viewers to go behind the scenes and learn of the garments’ waist line sizes and more.
Undressed: 350 Years of Underwear in Fashion showcases an incredible collection of historical garments that prompt thought on body image, beauty, practicality and the development of western ideals.
Notes: Queensland Museum features a special After Dark event. This includes music, cocktails and fashion talks, taking place on 5 December. A Behind the Scenes tours is also available on November 21 and 28.
