Underworld: Blood Wars is the fifth instalment of the highly successful Underworld franchise that started back in 2003 and subsequently spawned a series of vampire movies.
In this instalment Vampire death dealer Selene (played by Kate Beckinsale) continues her struggle against the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her. Both sides are trying to use her blood and that of her daughter to become Vampire-Lycan hybrids.
After hiding her daughter Eve (who only appears in memory flashbacks), Selene, David (played by Theo James) and his father Thomas (played by Charles Dance), attempt to end the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires.
However, firstly Selene has to contend with a power play within the Vampire coven, with the ambitious Semira (played by Lara Pulver) trying to gain control of everyone with help from her manipulative lover, Varga (played by Bradley James).
The Lycans are a stronger and more unified group than seen in the franchise before and under the leadership of fireband Marius (played by Tobias Menzies) they are strategic in their attacks.
There are epic battles between the Lycans and Vampires firstly in a coven high in the mountains that Selene and David visit. The final battle takes place at the home of the Vampire council where Selene and Marius fight to the death.
The acting and fight scenes are similar to those of the previous movies in the series and you do get glimpses of closure for some of the characters. The ending does point to the likelihood of a sixth movie in the series with elements of a new beginning for some of the characters.
While Blood Wars is unlikely to convert many new fans to the Underworld cause, it has plenty to offer for the sizeable army of existing devotees.
