War for the Planet of the Apes

War for the Planet of the Apes is the third and final instalment in the Planet of the Apes reboot and is easily the best of the series.

Directed by Matt Reeves, the film follows a confrontation between the apes, led by Caesar (played superbly by Andy Serkis), and the humans, led by The Colonel (played by Woody Harrelson) for control of the Earth.

The film starts with a rogue paramilitary faction known as Alpha-Omega, laying an attack against the woodland home of the apes.

During the attack, several Alpha-Omega militants are captured by the apes. Caesar orders the soldiers to be released, with a message to The Colonel that he desires peace between the humans and apes.

That night, a group of Alpha-Omega soldiers, led by The Colonel, infiltrates the apes’ home and The Colonel kills Caesar’s wife and his elder son.

Leaving his younger son in the care of others, Caesar departs to exact revenge on The Colonel.

He is accompanied by a small group including Maurice, an orang-utan.

While following the soldiers, Maurice finds a young girl who he names Nova (played by Amiah Miller) who is unable to speak and he adopts the girl, giving her a small rag doll.

They also have a chance meeting with an intelligent talking chimpanzee who had escaped from a zoo.

The chimpanzee, named Bad-Ape (played by Steve Zahn) is able to lead Caesar and his intrepid group to the soldiers’ base. Β

At the base, Caesar discovers the rest of his ape clan has been captured by the soldiers, and are being forced to build a wall.

Caesar is also captured and he is taken to The Colonel, who reveals to Caesar that a Simian Flu virus is causing humans to become mute and regress back to a primitive state.

The Colonel also reveals he is barricading himself in the facility to fend off an Army who are coming from the north to execute him because he has been killing any humans who have become infected with the virus.

Nova, sneaks into the facility and leaves her rag doll with Caesar. The Colonel discovers the doll and confiscates it.

Caesar and his group of apes are able to work out a means of escape via an underground tunnel.

While Maurice and Bad Ape use the tunnel to rescue all the apes, Caesar goes to confront the Colonel and discovers that Nova’s doll has infected the Colonel with the virus.

A subsequent battle occurs between the Alpha-Omega and the northern army, with the escaping apes caught in the middle.

Caesar is shot from behind with a crossbow before an avalanche devastates the armies.

Caesar and the apes survive by climbing nearby trees. They then cross the desert to find a new home well away from any humans.
