It was that time of the year again – time for hours of Greek music, the occasional plate-smashing event and, of course, mountains of sweet, golden honey puffs.
2016 marked the 40th anniversary of much-loved Greek festival Panyiri, bringing a slice of Greece to Brisbane’s Musgrave Park.
Held over two fun-filled days, the festival brought together Greeks and those who admittedly wish they were Greek to enjoy what the exciting culture had to offer.
Of course, this mainly involved food… and plenty of it.
Between the rows of food markets and the live cooking demonstrations – complete with sample taste testing – there was plenty of opportunity for visitors to happily work themselves into a food coma.
Plenty of big names also got involved in the action, including Channel Seven’s House Rule’s Luke and Cody who judged the thrilling Greek Coffee Making Competition when they weren’t busy flirting with the presenter.
My Kitchen Rules finalists Gianni and Zana also kept the crowds entertained with an impressive cooking demonstration, as did the Greek goddess herself Effie.
The stage was also the place to see the stars, with an almost endless list of exciting entertainment on offer for the public to enjoy.
Effie, Luke, Cody, Gianni and Zana joined Home and Away’s George Mason and Philippa Northeast in the prestigious Greek Dancing with the Stars on the Saturday, while the Sunday saw the heart-stopping honey puff eating and grape stomping competitions.
Topped off with a magical fireworks display each night, Panyiri marked its 40th anniversary in style and left attendees with a smile and maybe a couple of food babies – bring on the next 40 years. Opa!
